"My violin sounds incredible and it keeps getting better!" - Todd Clewell, Felton, PA

Violin making as it was...and still is.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to make an instrument?

Time frames vary depending on which instrument is ordered and the amount of ornamentation you desire. The weather also plays a very important role in determining how long the finishing process will take. Humidity and rain can be a real curse when spraying a mandolin or hand-rubbing a violin. Most orders are fulfilled within 2-3 months. Of course, in-stock instruments can be shipped same day.

How do you ship your products?

We use UPS for shipping and have been very pleased.

I like what I see in the pictures but I want to HEAR it before I make up my mind?

Of course you need to hear the sounds. We will ship an instrument to you (you provide your credit card number) then you have three days to decide whether this is the instrument for you. Call us with your decision. If you want to keep it we'll bill your credit card - if not you ship it back. You are responsible for shipping costs and any damages that may occur while the instrument is in your possession.

Bluett instuments are truly hand crafted.

Are arched instruments molded or carved?

Tops and backs are all hand carved, then gouged to specific graduations according to the individual piece of wood. Remember, like people, all wood is different!

How do you determine the thickness of the wood?

When I'm making a violin, I'm actually creating the perfect speaker that allows the wood to "pop" in and out when you play it. So, I tap the wood to the tones as I am carving. Thickness is also determined by the wood's density and overall flexibility.

What kinds of woods do you use?

Hardwoods like maple are used for backs & sides in order to project sound. Softer woods like spruce create the vibration and tone - they are used for taps.

Where do you get your wood?

I select only air dried wood from sources all over the world.

What kind of finishes do you use?

On violin family instruments I use brushed oil varnish exclusively. Oil varnishes allow wood to move to produce that vibrant tone you're looking for. Fretted instruments require a sprayed laquer finish for its durability and time proved quality of finish.

How do you bend the wood?

Water and heat are used to bend the sides that has been hand scraped to its specific thickness.

Can you inlay my girlfriend's name on a guitar?

You bet! We can customize your instrument to whatever you desire. Let your imagination run free!

What kind of deposit is required on a custom made instrument?

A 50% deposit is required on custom orders. The balance due when the instrument is complete. Remember the Bluett guarantee -- If after playing your Bluett instrument for three months it doesn't meet your needs - you can return it and I will make you another to meet those needs. There also is a lifetime guarantee of craftmanship to all original owners of Bluett instruments.
